You’re probably asking yourself: What is an LPG cake anyway – and how did it get its name? The sheet cake originally comes from central Germany. It is composed of several layers: At the bottom there is a dough base spread with a butter pudding cream. Then follow butter biscuits that are placed on top of the custard layer and dipped in schnapps – this gives the LPG cake just the right burst.

Recipe: The ingredients for LPG cake

You need these ingredients: 200 grams of flour, 450 grams of butter, 400 milliliters of milk, 240 grams of sugar, 4 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 packet of vanilla sugar, 1 packet of vanilla pudding powder, 5 eggs, a little salt, 300 grams of jam, 1 packet of butter biscuits, some brandy, 200 grams of coconut fat, 50 grams of whipped cream, 200 grams of dark couverture and 40 grams of cocoa.

And this is how it works: In a mixing bowl, mix the pudding powder with 40 grams of sugar and 6 tablespoons of milk until smooth, bring the rest of the milk to the boil in a saucepan on the stove.

When it boils, remove the pot from the heat, stir in the pudding mixture, preferably with a whisk, return to the stove and cook until the pudding is cooked, about a minute. It should then cool completely. Tip: Placing plastic wrap on top of the pudding will prevent a skin from forming as it cools. Also take 250 grams of butter out of the fridge so that the butter and pudding have room temperature later.

Heat the jam in a small saucepan and spread it over the base while it is still warm. Mix 250 grams of butter and pudding to create a smooth buttercream. Spread it on the cake and cover with a layer of butter biscuits. Then drizzle with brandy. If you want to avoid alcohol, you can use milk or juice.

Finally comes the chocolate frosting: heat the coconut oil and whipped cream in a saucepan, then add the lid and stir everything together until you get a smooth frosting. Pour it over the butter biscuits and gently smooth. If desired, the cake can then be decorated with biscuit crumbs and should be left in the fridge before eating to allow the schnapps flavor to develop. Enjoy your meal!
